Photoshooting the day away at Tomatina
Monday, June 9, 2008
We didn't get to throw tomatoes, but we did get free food, drinks and wonderful service at Tomatina as we took photos for an advertisement and article. Afterwards, we also discovered that they have free WiFi!
Here's some snapshots from this morning. You'll of course recognize Mimi Xu, devoted BARE staffer, and Jenny Zhang, one of BARE's models (from the latest issue, the blue shoot) and a FAST club member. Plus, some newbies were in the house today!
We were so excited to welcome new models from quite distant shores: Caroline, Ciara, Heather, and Eimear from Ireland. They just got to Berkeley last Wednesday, and it was great to be able to have some international representation in the mag! You can of course look for this feature in the next issue of BARE -- scheduled for back-to-school in late August/early September.

Nathan Lui was our handsome photographer this morning, and besides the food and the people, he managed to get some artsy shots.
Case 2: artsy shot- "reflections"
Planning the menu for the photoshoot with Tomatina executive chef Rogelio Jacinto.
Menu, menu, menu, the models ate well!
Our helpful server, Tammy, model and sustenance provider.
Dough balls.
Part 1 of the photoshoot with Jenny and Mimi at the bar -- Rachel showing the gals how to eat mussels.
Now Jenny and Mimi munch away. "Crunchy," according to Mimi.
Nathan takes a break from snapping away, gals munching away in the background.
After the shoot, Nathan and Rach look over pix. Notice the rather empty plates, we ate up all the leftover food after the shoot because it was SOOO good. I highly recommend the piadines! Oh, and of course in the new issue there will be plenty of coupon stuff for Tomatina, so you'll have even more incentive to go over there.
And, I leave you with a very low quality video of Rachel directing the four lovely ladies from Ireland. Can't wait to see the photos in the mag! =)

Mini website redesign for BARE
Saturday, June 7, 2008
I revamped the BARE magazine .org website just now, and before I head off to sleep (it's almost 2:45 a.m.! that's z's for me...) I thought I'd do a short post about it.

The website is of course still at http://www.baremagazine.org/, and you can find there all the resources you need to find out about what BARE magazine does and how to get in touch with the BARE team if you want to join. I also added links to our advertisers' websites.

Some issues I had: first off, I know the pictures are really bad quality right now, so I'll be working on that as soon as I can. If anyone has tips on how to deal with that, please comment! I used the basic Yahoo! website editor, perhaps this is why it's pretty bad quality on the images?
The design is a tad bit boring (that's understatement, if you can't tell...), so if anyone has page designs they want to whip up in Adobe Photoshop for me to put up, I'd love that!
Who Will Make "Le Smoking" Les Sexy Now?
Friday, June 6, 2008
Part of what made Yves Saint Laurent one of the most enduring figures in fashion, both commercially and artistically, was a unique and timeless sense of style and beauty that shows in the fact that you could still pull a Le Smoking suit on and be ready to tackle any serious sartorial event. There's been a lot of talk about how Saint Laurent was, arguably, one of the last great couturiers – the world could never have witnessed his Trapeze collection without being fundamentally changed – but there's also been plenty of discussion about which designers best represent the post-couture era of fashion as it is developing. Who makes your list of post-couture giants? Lagerfeld, for keeping Chanel sexy and profitable? Or maybe Prada for her nearly endless creative ingenuity? Hedi Slimane's razor thin silhouettes are still felt long after his departure from Dior Homme.
And as Linda Richmond would say:

"Discuss."

Does ANTM have some competition?
Wednesday, June 4, 2008
Heard of "She's Got The Look" premiering on TVland tonight?
Neither did I until a few minutes ago. New modeling competition focusing on the older age-range (at least compared to the ANTM we all love) -- these women look incredible (click to see photos).
Channel 72 is TVland in Berkeley, I believe. Tune in at 10pm. Not sure if I'll catch it tonight, but I'd love to hear what people think.

In a NY State of Mind
Tuesday, June 3, 2008
First off, I'm SO lucky to have gotten my internships at Radar and Teen Vogue, and thrilled that I get to spend my summer exactly how I've always dreamed. I applied for the internships early February and booked a flight out to NY to do interviews over Spring Break. Fortunately, I heard back from a few places right away and got to work tidying up my portfolio (and most importantly, picking out what to wear!)
Getting the internships seems to have been the hard part, because my first day at Teen Vogue consisted of everything I already do. I kept catching myself looking over my shoulders waiting for someone to reprehend me for reading fashion blogs, but I kept forgetting that reading fashion blogs IS my job.
I'm living in an NYU dorm with another blogger, Casey at Teenfashionista, and we both have jobs working at the online editorial department at Teen Vogue which makes things super convenient since I've got a ready-made go-to pal for exploring the city.
The best thing about the location is that it's exactly 2 blocks away from all the best shopping. Besides the standards (H&M, Forever21, Mango, Zara), there's also Uniqlo, Marc Jacobs, Opening Ceremony, Intermix, Anna Sui, Philip Lim, People's Republic...oh god. Actually, take a look for yourself:
The internships you drool at
Monday, June 2, 2008
I would like to take a moment to brag on behalf of our amazing BARE layout editor Connie, because she went to New York City and got herself some drool-worthy internships. And, just so we all back in Berkeley can envy her even more, she's blogging about it!
The coveting aside, I am so happy Connie's letting us peer into her life in the Big Apple as she interns at Teen Vogue and Radar magazines.
Connie blogs personally at http://prettylegit.blogspot.com/, so you can look there for some of her insight on what should be a fabulously fashionable summer, but don't be too antsy for a post in the next few, cuz she just landed in NYC yesterday, so have some patience!

Hot for Sex and the City?
Sunday, June 1, 2008
I can't believe it, but I actually woke up at 11:30pm two nights ago to attend the midnight showing of the Sex and the City movie.
I'd never been too much of a fanatic of the show itself (I've only seen a few episodes), but I figured it'd be fun to see all the fabulous clothes at least.
If you haven't seen the movie yet, definitely go this weekend! It's a really fun film, has it's cheesy moments, but even if you didn't keep up with the show itself, the movie does a great job keeping you in the loop about all the characters' lives.
And the clothes? Definitely fabulous.
Did anyone have a fave outfit that they can remember?? Or, also feel free to disagree with my rating of the movie. I'd give it 4 stars out of 5! Nice plot. Amazing wardrobe. Good acting. Funny script.
p.s. I have to say though, for those who've seen the movie, the last wedding dress that she gets to keep from Vivienne Westwood I believe, I actually didn't like that one as much as some of the other wedding dresses. =/
p.p.s. Did anyone see the photos from the Sex and the City NYC premiere? (see photos here if ya need to) I have to say, besides SJP's dress, I thought all the other celebs were rather unfab!
