Makeup Routine

Sunday, August 31, 2008

Now for a long post. Unfortunately the weather this week has left me less than inspired to blog about things fashion related. Still I have to talk about SOMETHING right and if there's one thing that I'm passionate about other than fashion its got to be health and beauty, minus the health. I probably started really using makeup products about 3 years ago and since then I have tried many a makeup product. I am slowly but surely narrowing the contents of my makeup bag to strictly HG (holy grail) products. Now for most college students speed and ease are probably the most important factors in determining what products to use. Unfortunately for you readers I am verrry slowww about getting ready in the morning and like to take my time so a speedy makeup routine isn't exactly a priority. Still, I have accumulated some fantastic products over the course of several months by obsessively scouring beauty blogs and product review sites that might be of interest to readers out there looking for their next beauty fix.

Bobbi Brown Concealer I look like a character from a horror movie when I wake up. Why? Insanely dark circles under my eyes! To avoid having young children run screaming for their moms the first thing I do every morning is put on concealer. Bobbi Browns concealer is awesome, it provides really great coverage and lasts all day.

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Some of you may have heard about this product as it is usually at the top of most foundation/tinted moisturizer best lists. Laura Mercier's tinted moisturizer is lighter than a foundation and blends really easily. The best part about it is that it evens out my skin tone and makes me look... alive.

Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat I don't use this highlighter ever day but thought it was worth a mention because I love it so. It's probably YSL's most famous product because it never cakes and contains light reflecting pigments that brighten up areas of your face. You can put it pretty much any where for a natural glow.

Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler Umm not much to say here, best eyelash curler, hands down. All you have to do is try it once, you'll never go back.

Shiseido The Mascara Base This is definitely a HG product, the difference is AMAZING, it keeps my lame asian eyelashes curled and adds volume and length. The only thing I will say is that its a bit trick to get off, so worth it though.

Lancome Virtuose Mascara This is a new buy and I think I'm in love. After many makeup counters, an annoyed boyfriend, and many tester tubes later I've found it. It has this crazy curved brush and the formula is awesome at keeping my eyelashes curled and light, my eyelashes have never been happier.

Benetint This is another one some of you may have heard of, its a cheek and lip stain and serves as an alternative to blush and lip gloss. I like this stuff because once you get the hang of applying the stain its easy and won't budge all day long. The lip stain isn't quite as long lasting but it makes your lips the color lips are supposed to be!

Man after writing this I feel like I wear a lot of make up... still my whole makeup philosophy is to use as many products as it takes to look as natural as possible. Does that make any sense?

Also I've included a few pictures of what I wore to work today.. to keep it fashion related and all.

This is me being a turtle... or being exasperated by my boyfriends crappy photography skills

First Bare Magazine staff meeting

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

This post is going to be short and sweet because my eyes are feeling quite heavy at the moment. We had our first staff meeting of the school year today, 8pm to be exact. Doreen, (EIC) went over some of the main points and focuses for the upcoming semester and a lot of fun and exciting stuff is coming up to look forward to. Err I don't know what else to say about the meeting except that there were some very nicely dressed people in attendance and that I'm fairly certain my arm was resting on a bicycle tire for the most part. Still for anyone that is considering joining the magazine I strongly suggest attending our first general meeting on Sept 3 (I'll post the whereabouts as soon as I know) it'll be a very fun engagement with slideshows and free food! Also I know someone left a comment asking me to post what I wore for my first day of school but by the time I got home I was soaked in sweat and very smelly so I opted not to. Sorry! It was pretty casual outfit: white tank from American Apparel, black high waisted shorts, F21 belt, and my trusty patent leather flats.
Below are a few pictures I took of some of the staffers, I didn't take a picture of myself because I looked gross :).

Another blog post about back to school

Tuesday, August 26, 2008

The day has come for all of us to wave goodbye to the summer and return to Cal ready to ... errr learn. Unlike the back to school days in highschool most college students couldn't give a hoot what they wore on their first day back. Or alternatively some make an effort at first and then fall back into that haze of sweats/basketball shorts and Cal hoodies/t-shirts. In fact the hot weather lately has made even me, queen of excuses to overdress, dread picking an outfit that won't leave me in a puddle in front of Sproul.

Still dreading it won't keep tomorrow from happening so I have to suck it up and just pick. I am honestly a person that has to pick my outfits a day ahead otherwise I'm left in a panic just staring at my clothes with about a million thoughts running through my head (although I'd probably look like my head was pretty empty if anyone saw me). Usually on the days that these episodes occur I get so frustrated I just leave the house in my Cal sweater and jeans. However, a resolution I made with a friend has forced me to try as hard as I can to NOT sport the sweater/jeans combo. Just a few alterations can take your ensemble from being boring and frumpy to appearing as though you actually care *which in my book is a good thing. So in order to prevent future mishaps I've come up with a few strategies that may be ...of little help to you but I'll share anyway!

1. umm I mentioned this before but pick your outfit a day ahead, I swear it saves me so much time!
2. experiment with the clothes you've always wanted to try but have never had the guts to, its the perfect campus to express diverse style so you'll feel like less of a weirdo here than anywhere else, take advantage.
3. layering is pretty basic at Cal because the weather can be slightly unpredictable. ie it'll be super hot and then freezing if you're standing under a tree?
4. its class not the prom
5. replace crocs, uggs, and rainbows with shoes that are actually cute (sorry if I've offended anyone but its a problem!)
6. don't try tooooo hard, if you've bought a few new things for school spread the love, there's no reason to wear everything at once on the first day back.
7. don't listen to me all I wear is black

p.s. sorry I don't have any images with this post but I left my camera at home. I will however have some images up tomorrow.

JIGSAW... not the puzzle

Saturday, August 23, 2008

Being a marketing intern is great, but it doesn't exactly pay the bills, and by bills I mean clothes. Enter Jigsaw on Berkeley's own little shopping strip, 4th street. For those of you guys that have never been on 4th street its lined with a great array of boutiques and cosmetics stores like Benefit, Bare Escentuals, and MAC. I had never heard of Jigsaw before I applied but apparently its all the rage in London and after having worked at the store for a few days I can see why. I am being completely honest when I say that they really have some great pieces. I'm partial to the unBELIEVABLE quality of their cashmere and leather as well as their accessories. But of course there's always a catch. Even with my very generous discount I still cannot afford ANYTHING at that damn store. Here's a quick example. On my second day on the job a customer asked me for the price on one of our new leather jackets, "Of course!" I said and casually flipped over the tag. Before I could stop myself I blurted "OMG its $800!" ...probably not the best way to sell a jacket. Still if your parents have blessed you with a fat wallet or are looking for some unique pieces to invest in or if you just want to stop by and keep me company definitely check it out next time your on 4th!

Me posing in Jigsaw clothes. We had to create day to night outfits and have our pictures taken to send to corporate...don't ask me why. I'm wearing a shirt and a skirt pulled up all the way to my chest to turn it into a dress. Also I'm pretty sure that fedora is going to be mine very soon

The Classic Blazer

Thursday, August 21, 2008

Apologies for my lack of posts but my good old roommate decided to go home for break and took her camera with her. Thus I had to resort to ordering my own camera (for a great price) and was waiting for it to be delivered. Anyhow my mom and a few relatives came up from SoCal to visit last weekend. During our visit to the city I insisted on going to Ralph Lauren in order to try on their classic navy blue blazer that I have been coveting since seeing it on Alexa Chung (British famous person). They were all out of course, apparently they're hard to find, but the nice gentlemen let me try on one that was on hold and in my size. Ugh, probably on hold for some skinny spoiled brat. Anyway the jacket fit like a glove and looked amazing! even my mom agreed. It was all going great until I flipped over the tag expecting to see a price in the 300 to 400 dollar range and was slammed with a number closer to a thousand. Well that was the end of that and I walked out feeling sad and disappointed. The day was not lost though because I ended up with a great classic black blazer from Theory AND it was on sale! My uncle decided to be cheeky and suggested I buy some gold thread and sew the Ralph Lauren Crest into my new blazer. Har har. Still Theory cuts a great blazer as well, not quite as snug and perfect as Ralph but it fits better than any other jacket I've tried (usually they're too big in the shoulders). I've been wearing it everyday since I got it and can assure you that my friends will get sick of seeing me in it, but I can't help it if it happens to go with everything.

These photos say just as much about attitude as they do about fashion.

Results are in: Yellow makes me happy!

Tried the color experiment last week. I wore as many new colors as possible and noted reactions. I found people treat me differently in yellow. It's true! Yellow made me smile more. It made me joke and bounce around more. The extra shazaam I got from wearing the color naturally made me a more agreeable person.

Of course this got me thinking... Everyone's heard the creepy guy with the moist palms and greasy hair tell you how a color enhances your skin tone, brings out your eyes and other jibberish. Everyone knows how (despite your immediate need to blow him off) you feel pretty good about that outfit. But maybe it's stronger than that.

For example, I adore reds and yellows because it brings out the highlights in my skin and hair. It's not the clothes. It's about how clothing can show you in a way you admire. If I don't feel "Arielle" emanating out of the clothes (figuratively guys, c'mon!) why should I wear them?

If you think about it, it's just clothing. It molds itself to you and does what your body tells it to. So find every single item that makes you feel like yourself and (pretty please!) burn everything that's just faking it.

PS I wore this to my internship at ZipRealty and felt damn cute. I bought the jacket at Goodwill for $8 & the comfortable arse shoes from PayLess for $20. How's that for college budgeting??

Ciao, Arielle Patrice Scott

Green like money, green like fashion: some "did-you-knows" from my last summer business class

Wednesday, August 13, 2008

My summer bummer is done-r!

Final minutes of summer school have come and passed; my UGBA 100 Business Communication class (one of the two classes the 200+ new Haas undergrads were required to take) ended at 10pm today, after we tacked on a 30-minute potluck partay to our usual class time.

And boy, did we deserve it! For the past two weeks, I've sat through over 35 five-minute individual presentations and six 25-minute group presentations, about business topics covering just about everything: from green energy initiatives in China, to exploitation of student athletes by colleges, to basics of indie film investing, to Roth IRAs, to the 1970s Pet Rock phenom -- BARE's own Ashley Nucera, also a biz ad major, gave that delightful presentation on the ridiculous(ly smart) marketing genius that is the pet rock... if you don't know what I'm talking about, click here to get... the dirt (get it?) on that sensation.

Usually, I didn't think to write on the BARE blog about any of these, but today, one presentation was all about green fashion, so I wrote down a lot of fun stats and facts to post up for you. Did you know...

... there are 1/3 lb. of pesticides in every t-shirt? That means every three tees in your closet have a whole water bottle full of pesticides! Say what?!

... every year the average American throws away 68 lbs. of clothing? That's 20 times the weight of a college textbook.

... that new clothes smell I usually love so much is actually formaldehyde and urea? Reaction should be: ew.

... Patagonia can turn water bottles into polyester shirts?

... Walmart, despite their often horrible reputation, actually started selling organic cotton in 2005?

... and, is now the biggest buyer of organic cotton?

... of course, that Patagonia beats Walmart in organic goods? Patagonia started to selling organic cotton in 1995, and went all-organic by the next year.

... Levi's takes denim scraps from the floors of their Albuquerque manufacturing plant and sends it to a paper company to be made into stationary for the Levi's headquarters? So that's where Miss Levi's jeans went...

And, ps, BARE featured fashion's "greening" in its second issue from this spring; you can find that

Introducing Arielle Patrice Scott

Monday, August 11, 2008

Hey everyone! I'm Arielle and a former model for BARE. I was so excited to be on the first cover and now I am just as happy because I can join everyone on the BARE Mag blog! A little about me – I am currently a junior at UC Berkeley and just recently decided to move away from the fashion industry into business & marketing. I write mostly about entrepreneurship and/or how to find your dream job after graduation, you can check it out at ariellethesuperhero.wordpress.com. But my first love will always be fashion. More importantly, how to dress exactly how you feel at that moment on a college budget. Sounds familiar? Awesome! Well, how about I show you the best way to express your OWN style without robbing a bank. I don't want to overwhelm you with tons of fashion goodies, but I'll kick off my guest posting with a special exercise: For the next week, wear a different color or pattern everyday and make notes on how people react differently to you. I'll do it, too! We may find something interesting – people smile more at others wearing yellow, older people respect the opinions of those wearing black, etc. – just write down any notes and we can share what we find next week. Just in case you were wondering what the heck I look like or wanted to put a face (or wardrobe) next to the name, you can find all of the above below:

Business Casual... sort of

Friday, August 8, 2008

Being a student at Cal doesn't provide a lot of opportunity for dressing up. This can be a bit problematic for me, seeing as most of the clothes I own seem to be a little dressier than what people might deem appropriate for running to class. "Why are you so dressed up? Where are you going?" Ugh, I hate that. So getting a position as a marketing intern for an up and coming German skincare line was exciting for the experience sure, but possibly just as exciting for giving me an excuse to wear all the borderline "too dressy" outfits in my closet. I'm not exactly sure what the hell business casual means either, I don't actually own any dress pants, and have only one white button down that I rarely ever wear (mostly because it makes me sweat). So basically for my current job I am just wearing what I would normally always wear to school.. if I woke up in time to do so.

p.s. sorry for the HORRIBLE pictures but it was early in the morning and I wasn't about to wake up my roommate for an impromptu photo shoot.

This Weather...

Tuesday, August 5, 2008

is very confusing. Lately its been more difficult than usual for me to pick out outfits for going to class. I am what you might call very very weather sensitive, meaning that when its cold I am usually FREEZING and when its hot I feel like my face is about to melt off. Today was another such day when I wasn't sure what to wear to class *read previous post regarding sweats and hoodie combo. It was grey and gloomy outside but I didn't want to wear my coat, and would not permit myself to wear a hoody. So I opted to wear a sweater, skirt and tights and see how it faired in Berkeley's unpredictable weather. Overall I think I did pretty well although I was kind of cold on the walk home and kind of hot after walking all the way to North Gate Hall. Still I wasn't wishing I had worn 10 more layers and I didn't look as gross and sweaty walking into class as usual. Hooray!

p.s. This sweater is one of the most colorful pieces I own... if that tells you anything about me and colors.

I should really tidy up my room...

My roommate says these shoes make me look like a cowgirl gone punk

A sneak peak view of Verrieres & Sako's new collection

Monday, August 4, 2008

I had been excited all week since receiving an invite to attend a sneak-a-peak event for Verrieres & Sako's Spring '09 collection. BARE staff writer and stylist Cheney Chen, new staff member Poornima Muralidhar (with her bf Rick in tow), and I (with my bf Evan joining too) hit the streets of SF yesterday to the JW Marriot by Union Square to attend the Verrieres & Sako private showing.

We didn't know what to expect (the invite said fashion show, photo shoot, and collection viewing -- turns out it was a photo shoot staged as a runway show, and attendees could browse the collection too). It was so cool getting to talk to the designers, Kimie Sako and Stephanie Verrieres, seeing all the organized craziness of getting the models ready for the shoot (we arrive around 1:15pm, models said they'd been there since 10 a.m., and had only just started shooting), and getting to actually see all the clothes up close.

This sneak peak is particularly awesome too. Turns out, Verrieres & Sako's Spring '09 collection has made it to New York Fashion Week! Plus, they have a feature coming up in September's InStyle magazine.

It was such an honor to attend the event, talk to the designers, and we took a lot of pictures to share with all the blog readers. So, enjoy!

Poornima (left) and Cheney (right) hold up two Verrieres & Sako dresses. The ruching on the dresses was so meticulous, and the fabric, we thought, would be so perfect for a cocktail party or night on the town. They also had this dress in a gorgeous teal color and red.

Two racks full of dresses, blouses, and suits for us to look through. It included the Spring '09 line and some of the Fall collection as well. Kimie Sako told us that media often like coming to these kinds of events because, unlike at a runway show, you can actually see the clothing up close here -- it was so fun seeing all the stitching work up close and seeing how incredibly well-made these clothes are.

An important part of each photo is the styling though too, and that includes a girl's best friend -- jewelry. The lady in the background of the photo was at the shoot just to bring accessories. Here, the stylist (right) is putting a gorgeous gold and teal-jeweled necklace on one of the models.

A better shot of the dress with the accessories; there was a matching ring for the model too.

Now, the designers, Stephanie (left) and Kimie (right) evaluated the look. Turned out, the necklace attracted too much attention, so they opted for pairing the teal dress with only the ring instead.

Teal dress makes its way down the runway. The photog was at the end of the runway snapping photos (you can see the lights there on the right side of the picture).

Another Verrieres & Sako dress going down the runway.

The BARE crew watching the runway show/photo shoot at the Verrieres & Sako sneak-peak event.

Another model getting hair done before her shoot. We thought it was cute how she was on her phone throughout the pampering.

From left to right: me, Stephanie Verrieres, Kimie Sako, Poornima, and Cheney. We BARE girls finally managed to steal the two talented designers away for a quick picture. Thanks Verrieres & Sako for inviting BARE to the event!

If the Sartorialist came to Berkeley...

Friday, August 1, 2008

I'm going to begin this post by apologizing for my poor photography skills. Also I only managed to take two pictures because my camera died, typical. Still I thought that the students I did shoot were great examples of Cal's diversity in regards to fashion. Whether you're stylin' a bright pink skirt and some killer boots, or staying low key with a simple button down and jeans, there is (almost) NO excuse to be seen jetting around campus in sweats and a Cal sweater. I promise to remember to charge my batteries and take more than two pictures next time. Right as my camera died a tall student (European I think) walked past me in a button down, red shorts, and leather loafers... it was a very sad moment indeed.

J'adorable

Proof that you're never too young to glam it up.
