BARE was out n' about in Rockridge

Sunday, September 28, 2008

Today's Out and About in Rockridge street festival was quite a rockin' change of pace for what are usually quiet Sundays here around Cal. The Rockridge shopping district was shut down to all traffic except pedestrians; hundreds of them, from kids to grannies, came out to try foods, shop (everything from bags to art to pottery to underwear), and... watch fashion.

There were two runway shows featuring clothing and styling by various Rockridge boutiques and salons, including: Dapper menswear, Crush on College, Alexander Pope salon, Tootsies shoes, Crossroads Trading Co., Seven 7 Salon, Inamorata, Sahaira, and others. Here are a bunch of photos I snapped at the event!

BARE's Summer-Jobs-of-Fashion

Monday, September 22, 2008

This Wednesday, BARE will be hosting a Summer-Jobs-of-Fashion event, where we'll hear from four Cal students in a moderated panel discussion talk about their experiences pursuing fashion-related jobs/internships this past summer.

Join us at 8pm, this Wednesday, Sept. 24, in Room 136 Barrows. Snackies will be provided.

As for a preview, meet the panelists:

NK... interned this summer for skincare start-up, amea skindividuals. The brand demo-ed at high-end women's retailer Henri Bendel in NYC. She worked extensively with top fashion bloggers to promote the brand.

CW... interned for Teen Vogue and Radar in NYC. She attended Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week earlier this month, and works with Chictopia.

ML... works at a high-end menswear boutique in Rockridge and is currently collaborating with more local retailers to create a runway show for next weekend's Out & About in Rockridge festival.

AS... models, but foremost, she worked this summer as a marketing consultant for fledgling fashion businesses. She is currently working to launch a website to connect college students with their dream internships and projects.

Hope to see everyone there.

Inogu Fabrics launches fall collection

BARE magazine's friends at Inogu Fabrics, the new-on-the-scene t-shirt company based in Berkeley (and San Diego... read on to get why), earlier this week announced the launch of their fall collection.

Inogu Fabrics was started by Cal student Jason Lee (with his childhood friend Jordan Ma, who goes to UC San Diego... see, now you get it). Inogu Fabrics is named from the word "enogu" meaning color or paint, and they live up to the epithet with their t-shirts having bold colors and unique original designs.

The brand was featured in BARE's third issue currently circulating. Jason describes it as "bringing a mature sophistication to everyday expression while capturing the youthful whimsy of childhood imagination."

Bare Magazine Issue 3 Launch Party

Sunday, September 14, 2008

Last Thursday night Bare Magazine hosted a mixer to launch its third issue. The party was held at downtown Bar & Restaurant in Berkeley and guests included: ASUC senators, local business owners, the editors of The Clog and The Heuristic Squelch, FAST members, and former Bare models. Attendees enjoyed great food and schmoozing as well as a raffle which included a Gucci coin purse as one of the prizes! The night was an unbelievable success and we at Bare couldn't be more pleased with the outcome.

"Huh? A fashion mag in Berkeley?"

Ever since inviting The Daily Clog to attend BARE magazine's upcoming launch party last week, a bunch of blogosphere rumblings have been asking exactly that! So I would like to take this opportunity to tell the community a little more about us.

BARE magazine is an all-student-produced publication at UC Berkeley exploring fashion as
more than just cloth on a body. We aim to represent creativity and inspiration, ingenuity, and passion. Passion for art, passion for the aesthetic, and passion for one's own tastes, biases, and self-expression.

Some of the bloggers got the impression from our blog that we are more Sartorialist-style. While we are still experimenting with how we'll use this blog for content, the magazine itself is actually more diverse we cover topics from social issues to high fashion to designers around Cal.

The photos below are from a photo shoot BARE did last semester (for our second issue), featuring the work of local professional designer Erin Mahoney. The photography, modeling, directing, and styling are all done by undergrads at Cal. The photographs (taken by Tao Ning, a Cal senior last year and modeled by Cal sophomore, JJ Johnson) accompany BARE's interview with the designer.

If readers like this content, we'll definitely post more of BARE's past work on the blog. And, if you're a Cal student who'd like to join the staff, our brainstorming session for BARE's
fourth issue is tomorrow.

So to the fellow bloggers, we say, "Yes! There is a fashion blog from UC Berkeley!" We think the work is pretty good, and hope you do too.
