Alexander Wang VS Phillip Lim

alexander-wang01

This week and the week after has and will be dreadful. My laptop broke. Alright so the weeping has got to end but in the meantime, I'll come up with lots of interesting stories for you guys.

So just last week, Alexander Wang was named the 2008 CFDA Fund Designer of the Year, which is, like, a big deal. This huge news didn't really come to anyone's surprise for he has been the newcomer favorite for about a year now. I remember doing my third round of runway evaluations for last years Spring 2008 (yes, I usually look over the collection three times) and remember reviewing this unforeseen designer. I was shocked but amazed that someone threw models onto the runway denim and cotton pieces actually wearable on the streets. After further evaluation, I was happy to hear that he used real models as his inspiration for that collection and thus (I unofficially declared) the urban-wear era was born.

But to my surprise, I found his recent victory at the CFDA to be shockingly similar to relatively newcomer Philip Lim. Lim's line, 3.1, was the hit of the new voice of his generation. Young girls, girls that now wear Wang, were all over Lim's delicate flower detail in his work. Who could forget the amazing rosette trapeze dress that went like hot cakes at Nordstrom (and Forever 21 did copycat versions of). He took quite different inspirations from on-the-go women (as opposed to the fantastic lifestyle of models that Wang epitomizes). He thought of the powerful woman who still didn't want to compromise dressing up.

It's interesting to see the transition "it" girls have now made, from the pretty little white chiffon dress to ripped jean shorts with distressed tights. Though I much prefer the classical renditions of Philip Lim, I see the practicality of Wang's work. I'm probably the only one on the BARE team who still fantasizes about Lanvin rather than Balmain. Besides, no one can pull-off coats and statement ruffles everyday!

More from Fast :: Aalia Maan

Tuesday, November 25, 2008

Student designer Aalia Maan brings something to the table one wouldn't expect from most college designers. There is a refined sense of sophistication that reverberates throughout her collection. This she calls "Renewable Elegance." Her style is cute and alluring, yet dignified.

The first piece of the collection really set sail. A nautical-inspired suit jacket and gray tailored dress shorts gave a polished, classy look, successfully complimented by the pearl necklace. This was reminiscent of such glamour brought to previous generations by ladies such as Jacqueline Kennedy and Grace Kelly.

Mixing polka dot and pinstripe Maan's second piece is perfect for work or play. This outfit speaks strong and dominant yet sleek and sexy, successfully complimenting the distinct elegant nature of the collection.

Looking fresh out of Scotland, this Aalia Maan creation is fit for any bonny lass (or lady). Beautiful red plaid envelopes this playful mini dress with a bow on the chest accompanied by another in the hair. Just darling!

The golden rule of women has been that the LBD is always a safe bet. However Aalia Mann rises above the others. From the cute neck-line (revealing just enough) down to the puffball skirt this dress demonstrates the meeting of sophistication and sex appeal. This is how it's done!

Just thinking about the workmanship that went into this dress is a bit mind boggling.

FAST makes a STATEMENT

Sunday, November 23, 2008

We just got back from the Fashion and Student Trends' (FAST) bi-annual student-produced runway show. This year's theme “STATEMENT” featured original student designs made with eco-friendly materials.

show 1

Of the seventeen designers who showed, three collections really stood out. Elizabeth Chan and Jocelyn Fong presented a surprisingly luxe collection made with purely salvaged materials. Military-inspired hardware and rich, saturated colors gave a sophisticated feel while clever accessories (a bag for example, was made with a metal dishrack-turned-cuff) lightened the mood.

show 3

Kelsey Johnson presented a series of looks that injected everyday objects such as shopping bags and candy wrappers with a whimsy reminiscent of Viktor & Rolf.

show 2

Paul Tran ended the show with an avant-garde collection of sculpted paper, armored hip-plats, and structured bustiers that were decoupaged with fashion editorials and ads; a literal celebration of fashion in all its forms. Tran's garments were a fitting end to a show that gets better every year.

Overall, the aesthetic drew upon old-school glamor; strong, feminine silhouettes that played with proportion, texture and color. We can't wait to see what FAST has in store for the future! More pictures on the BARE blog over the next week from the event.

A Little Disappointed

Tuesday, November 18, 2008

Sorry about the lack of posts lately, things should be back to speed here now that the second round of midterms are over. While the latest collaboration between Target and Alexander McQueen's diffusion line McQ caused quite the stir, hype does not neccessarily mean a good line. It's still a bit too early to say how it will all turn out, but these latest pictures from WWD.com have us thinking a little less chic and little more Jenny Humphrey from Gossip Girl (which if you are familiar with the show is a VERY bad thing.) So far, not impressed.

YSL Exhibit

Wednesday, November 12, 2008

john at ysl

Sadly I don’t get the chance and time to go to San Francisco as often as I should. But every time I do, I’m never unimpressed with the serene atmosphere and relaxed people.

But today was not just any practical day. When I saw a fellow blogger’s ode to a YSL exhibition at none other than the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park (which in itself is gorgeous scenery), I had to hop on public transportation to see this for myself.

As most of you fashion people should know, the great Yves Saint Laurent died in June of this year and fashion has never suffered greater. In his work, a true lover of fashion can see the insight and determination this man put into his work. His influences were boldly stated in his work, from artists such as Braque and Shakespeare to exotic cultures of Spain and China. Each collection had varying textures (with gawking mixtures of rooster feathers, velvet, sequins, beads, wood, plastic, and chiffon), but the thing that seemed to be holding each collection together was the immense amount of precision and love put into every single piece of Laurent’s looks. If you take time to read the side notes about the era and intention behind each collection (which me and my friends did…for about two hours) you can almost sense what YSL was thinking at the time. His craftsmanship was so tailored towards the practical woman of the generation that he never seems to go out of style. I even saw the influence of stars (which were recently recreated last season as accessories)!!

There’s so much I can say before you actually visit the exhibit itself and breathe the tip of essence that YSL evolved to become. Visit the de Young Museum located inside the Golden Gate Park by taking the AC Transit F bus all the way to the San Francisco Terminal ($0), then walk downstairs to the take the Muni 5 ($1.50 for both ways) to Fulton St. & 8th Ave., and enter the park and you’ll see signs directing you there. With a student ID and Muni bus pass, the ticket costs you $14. The museum holds this exhibit till April 5, 2009 and is open Tuesday through Sunday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.; Fridays until 8:45 p.m.. There’s no excuse not to visit this exhibit for such a relatively low price.

As in the words of YSL himself, “Fashion changes, style remains.”

Rainy day shoes

Tuesday, November 11, 2008

While the weather lately has been fairly unpredictable we think that its safe to say that the summery weather that Berkeley was blessed with for a few months is now drawing to an inevitable end. Now is the time to prep yourself for the stormy battlefield that will be your usual walk to class and why not battle in style? Here are a few of our favorite picks that might help brighten up those damp days.

The Leopard Scarf

scarf

If you’re like me and check up on numerous fashion blogs, you’ve probably seen the x-long Louis Vuitton leopard scarf wrapped around the necks of very powerful fashion people. Yeah it’s about a few seasons behind, but that’s (unfortunately) how mainstream fashion works.

I actually considered investing in the real thing ($725, www.eluxury.com) last year but I’m kind of glad I didn’t. As manufacturers finally caught on that Marc was setting a trend (what a surprise!) in fall 2006, they hopped right on the train.

But if you want to save an extra couple hundred (and who doesn’t) for an imitation from Charlotte Russe ($6.99, www.charlotterusse.com), I probably won’t notice when you’re walking down the street.

A colored option may be a little more fitting for this season. I’m a huge fan of odd-colored classics and this is no exception. Loosely hang this pink version from Forever 21 ($7.80, www.forever21.com) and any basic outfit will become lively. Maybe try this scarf under a coat for a bit of color pop…Hmmm…

The beauty of this accessory is its versatility. Wrap it around your neck with the hundreds of different ways or, my personal favorite, tie it on the handle of your boring handbag. See, runway looks aren’t that hard to achieve!

Fall Boots

Wednesday, November 5, 2008

If you want to add a little edge to your winter wardrobe, leather boots with hardware details are the perfect option. Though the studded Chloe ones that every chic celebrity and their mom seem to be wearing recently might be a bit out of the normal college student budget, there are many affordable options at Target right now.
