The executive taste buds of Cafe Rouge

When you feel like enjoying a delicious meal of local, organic, and seasonal ingredients, head to 4th Street's Café Rouge. Dishes range from rustic Mediterranean to classic American and are not only beautifully presented, but they taste as good as they look, because each dish is perfectly crafted by Rick DeBeaord, the Executive Chef.

Chef DeBeaord grew up in Lincoln, Southern California, a small farming community where he gained a respect for farmers and the great food they produce. Today, his dishes feature seasonal produce offered at the local Monterey Market. Menus change every other week to highlight the freshest local ingredients.

When asked about where he draws his greatest inspiration from, DeBeaord explains, “my biggest inspiration for the menus is the traveling I’ve done, and cookbooks… chefs need to read otherwise everything becomes stale.”

DeBeaord draws much of his inspiration from trips to Italy as well. He especially appreciates the “simplicity of their food and the freshness of it… they’re very seasonal and they’re not pretentious, as French food can be.”

With the current economic downturn, DeBeaord has reformatted his menu “so people can come out to eat good food.” Oysters for example are $1.00 each on Tuesdays through Thursdays from 5:30 to 9:30pm.

In addition to delectable Mediterranean entrees and small plates, Café Rouge offers American dishes like burgers, hot dogs, and ribs made with organic and sustainably produced meat. At Café Rouge “everything is made in house from scratch.” And, it’s nice to know it’s only a bus ride away.

Here are some pictures from my most recent visit:

BARE around town :: The Lounge

Berkeley is home to several distinct neighborhoods and districts, each characterized by a personal style and flavor. Last Saturday, my roommate Taylor Schooley (cover girl of BARE's Issue #3 and also BARE Assistant Editor) and I took ourselves off for a little adventure to the elegant Fourth Street District (located just off University after the Freeway Exit). On the recommendation of BARE Editor-in-Chief Doreen Bloch, we checked out The Lounge, a gorgeous nail spa located on the corner of Delaware and Fourth Streets.

We couldn't have been more pleased with our treatment there--a manicure cost only $10, a total steal for the service and hospitality we received (the receptionist even recognized Taylor as cover girl!). Though there are several higher-end treatments which are certainly more expensive, the basic manicure was an fantastic treat that didn't completely empty our already drained college student pocket books.

If you have the time, Fourth Street is an afternoon excursion that shouldn't be missed! The salon does not have a website but runs at normal hours and accepts walk-ins. Enjoy!

The lipstick index, and a BARE meeting tonight

For the academic-minded beauty brains reading BARE today, do lipstick sales really go up during recessions? See what The Economist had to say about it this week in their article titled, "Lip Reading."

Reportedly, Leonard Lauder, chairman of beauty brand Estee Lauder, coined the term "lipstick index" in 2001, when despite a recession, lipstick sales increased 11% in the US.

And, stop by at the BARE meeting tonight. 8pm. 110 Barrows. We will be assigning roles for Issue #5 - photography, writing, illustrating, styling, etc.

Lil B from Pack has style

On Friday, UC Berkeley's entertainment group SUPERB put on a concert featuring two popular musical acts from Berkeley, the Cataracts and the Pack, the latter of which is most famous for the popular rap song "Vans." The concert was free and exclusively for UC Berkeley students.

Music aside, though, I was mostly impressed with the outfit of the Pack member Brandon McCartney, who goes by the stage name Lil B.

Lil B stood out from his urban streetwear-clad band mates, sporting pink skinny jeans, a blue long sleeve shirt, layers of African-inspired necklaces, and sunglasses with brightly colored frames.

Well done.

BARE's winter break adventures :: Karen Kwok

This winter break, I went to both Hong Kong and Paris, which by the way was REALLY cold. I took a lot of photos of myself attempting to look trendy in the cold weather, and I tried taking pics of people randomly on the streets. Unfortunately, I wasn't confident to ask them in French, so it ended up being me creepily snapping shots at them. A collection of photos that I have chosen are below:

One-of-a-kind Hermes bags, embellished with jewels. On display at the Hermes store on St. Germaine in Paris.

The name of the game is to put on as many layers as possible without going out looking like a blob. Walking towards Champs-Elysees feeling very cold.

When I travel, I try my best to look like locals and not be pinpointed as a tourist. Enjoying a nice cafe au lait after a mid-afternoon stroll at the Louvre.

The French really love their reds.

Everyone on the streets for some reason looks trendy to me. Fancy hats, designer bags, cashmere scarf, and boots seem like a must.

Translated as "Seafood Street," a famous area in Sai Kung that boasts many excellent seafood restaurants serving a large range of seafoods. Here I am seen wearing my newest addition to my wardrobe, my favorite leather jacket, with all its zippers and details, from a local Hong Kong designer Blues Hero -- a brand known for its fine leather.

BARE's back from hibernation

As you can see BARE's been on hiatus for the latter part of Winter Break, but as the flock of scholastic-minded youth returns to Berkeley, BARE magazine is back again too, and so excited for what will be an amazing semester! Here's what you can look forward to on the BARE blog over the next few days:

Stumped on what to wear for your Inauguration Day party tomorrow? BARE's Polyvore-creator Fiona Mehta's got ya covered (literally). Check out BARE first thing tomorrow morning for inspirations.

What was the fashionable crew of BARE up to over Winter Break? Check out our photos throughout the week as BARE staffers talk about their fashion-based endeavors from the month-long vacation. Includes fashionable adventures in Singapore, a trip to Opening Ceremony (a retail hot-spot started by Cal Berkeley grads) in New York, and others.

The best nail salon in Berkeley? The Lounge. 4th Street. Hands (and feet) down.

And finally, which magazine will be sending a reporter to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City this Spring semester? You got it, BARE! We are so excited to announce that BARE will be reporting live from New York City. We successfully applied for and received a press pass for a BARE student staff member to go to New York City and report. As you can probably guess, we are ecstatic!

Chain Links

chains

Alright, so I admit I’m not a big jewelry person. Sometimes I find it absurd that women splurge thousands of dollars on something that looks as useless as a Persian cat. I mean how many times can you sport that thing in public (personally I can only think of the occasional holiday dinner)? However, I have oddly come across many fashionistas gleaming themselves with accessories shaped like chain links. Call my bluff on this trend, but I think it’s a real keeper.

I’ll start off with the not-so-practical jewelry I was degrading earlier. Swarovski designed a chain link bracelet that even left me gawking ($95, http://www.gilt.com/). Not too bad of a price tag, but I think we can go even lower (please comment if I start to sound like a game show host). Marc by Marc Jacobs made cute versions of this trend, which look like derivatives of the classic charm bracelet, with a dangling Miss Marc ($78, http://www.nordstrom.com/)!

As you know, the blogosphere has bred a new generation of innovative fashion icons. Two notable bloggers, Style Rookie (www.tavi-thenewgirlintown.blogspot.com) and Style Bubble (www.stylebubble.typepad.com) have been spotted with chains on their necks. Before you go on thinking about Kanye’s bling, let me clarify that these are no ordinary links. The brighter, more obnoxious it is, the more of a hoot it’ll be. Since I can’t find a retail version of this necklace (I’m guessing cause it’s such a primitive idea), I think this calls for another DIY project. Take inspirations from these bloggers; don’t shy away from color or texture. Experiment with color themes (but please, no Cal colors), always remembering that being dramatic is key.

If any of you attempt this project, we would love to see your input. Send us various pictures on your interpretation of this trend and email them to Doreen@baremagazine.org, and we’ll post a follow-up if the crowd is responsive. Get to it fellow bloggers! Sew away!
