Help Stop Fashion Piracy Now!

Monday, July 27, 2009

Designs by UC Berkeley's FAST designers during last semester's PLAYgreen Festival.

As a fully student produced fashion magazine on UC Berkeley campus, we fully understand and appreciate the time and creativity put into the work of designers and artists. Piracy in the fashion industry is omnipresent and copyright laws to protect designs must be created and enforced to protect these artists.

An SF based organization, Arts of Fashion Foundation advocates for the development of copyright laws to protect designers. We urge all those in support of Fashion and Design to help push for a Design Piracy Prohibition act that will safeguard the "creative potential" of current and future designers, giving "US fashion industry a true future". Currently they are circulated an online petition to endorse the Design Piracy Prohibition Act that will be presented to Congress. Please find the petition here and help support the fashion industry.

As well, this is a perfect opportunity to meet the Chictopians you're always following that give you inspirations and exchange clothes that you're bored of.

Jason Wu :: "I'm My Worst Critic"

Monday, July 20, 2009

As the inaugural madness from Michelle Obama's evening dress fails to die down, Jason Wu is undoubtedly one of the only few designers actually expanding in this economy. It's a treat whenever a designer as successful as he exposes himself to the public. Inspirations, shame, and flaws are always evident even in the best in the business. That's why BARE is mesmerized by the words that designer Jason Wu writes for The Times UK. Almost like a biography, without the hours of reading long-ended sentences. His imperfections surely make him a true visionary, and that is why the world is so fascinated by his work.

Want To Be on Top? :: The Top Model Franchise

Thursday, July 16, 2009

You may have heard that question more than once… if you are a fan of the “Top Model” franchise. If you are, then you must know that there are many variations of “Top Model.” The most famous is America’s Next Top Model, created by former Victoria’s Secret Model, Tyra Banks. Amongst the many countries that have a variation of top model, my favorite, and I think best franchise, comes from Australia.

They do things different in the land down under. The contestants can be as young as sixteen to be eligible for the competition. The majority of the girls dress better than their American counterparts. Let’s face it, often times we’ve scrutinized some of the outfits the American contestants wear. Another, and probably the biggest difference is during the final show of the series (they call them series instead of cycles). Their finale is live, and the public gets to vote on who they want to win the competition. The public’s vote is combined with the judge’s individual votes to crown the winner.

Australia’s fifth series of Top Model ended recently with Tahnee Atkinson taking the Top Model crown. At the age of seventeen, she appears to be poised to achieve great things, but I’m not quite sure she’s cut out for it. In all honesty, I believe she won the competition because of her personality. Her final two opponent, Cassi Van Den Dungen, who is seventeen as well, often came off as a brat throughout the entire series, many times threatening to quit. But what's important are the photoshoots, right?
Clare Venema, who I thought had the most international potential and can easily cross over from high fashion to commercial modeling

Tahnee emerged victorious thanks to the Australian public. This series of AuNTM was not as entertaining as previous ones. Demelza Reveley, the winner of series four captured my attention from the very first episode and won the competition. I even named my phone after her! But without a question, series three winner, Alice Burdeu has been the most successful model to come out of any of the top model franchises. She is definitely a girl BARE would like to feature in the near future.

As the winner Tahnee will be represented by
Priscilla’s Model Management for twelve months, Maybelline New York will send her on a $25,000 trip for two to New York and will be featured as the face of Maybelline New York’s new color collection, she will have an eight page spread in Harper’s Bazaar Australia, and pocket $25,000. Not bad, but sometimes being runner-up is a blessing in disguise. Cassi was offered a contract by Elite Model Management in New York City and could very well appear on the catwalk come this September for Fashion Week!

You can browse through the model's portfolios at the
AuNTM official website.

Issey Miyake :: "Every Step Taken is Another Step Closer to World Peace"

Tuesday, July 14, 2009

A renowned Japanese designer, Issey Miyake, recently wrote a beautiful op-ed article for The New York Times. Although the article is translated from Japanese, the powerful voice of Miyake shines through the english translation. His article is a call to action, directed to the world and to the Obama administration to take the lead "toward creating a world that knows no fear of nuclear threat".

We pride Miyake for his inspiring designs and for sending such a powerful message out to the world! Click here to read the full article.

Interview with CEO Tony Hsieh of Zappos.com

Friday, July 3, 2009

BARE Magazine had a chance to do an interview with Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos.com and Eileen Lewis, Zappos' Director of Fashion Strategy.

If you've never heard of Zappos, this is your chance to get to know the Best #1 company in terms of customer service. Fortune Magazine also rated it as “100 Best Companies To Work For”. I’ve been told stories, and I’m sure there’s a gazillion others, about the superiority of their service! A friend of mine told me someone actually called Zappos to order some pizza (making the long story short) and although Zappos is a retailer, the customer rep had pizza delivered to the house. I know, right? Even if this didn’t happen, the fact a story like this exists goes to show their dedication in providing the best service to customers, like you and me.

The story above might have stemmed from the fact that Tony had a pizza business in college before launching Zappos.com in 1999. Zappos is huge on delivering happiness to customers and employees.

How do you decide on your merchandise? Are you selective, or is it just based on the brands you know that can sell?
We look at what the customers are asking for as well as the next hottest trends so that we always have what the customers what.

Do you track what the top brands or fashions are, and how?
Yes, we constantly shop the market internationally as well as all of the media available to us.

Why did they decide to expand into clothing and jewelry?
We want to deliver a better customer experience by having everything that our customers would need to complete the look. These were natural categories to go into next based on their volume on the web. We also sell bags, watches, eyewear, beauty, etc

Can you tell us, based on your data, what one or two top trends are for the summer?

For Clothing: Feminine Print and Bermuda Shorts

Buy at Zappos.com
For Jewelry: Bug Jewelry and Leather Wrap Bracelets

Buy at Zappos.com

Their site offers everything, and trust me on their superb service! If you don't believe me, check them out for yourself! Also, Tony is very active with his Zappos and the public community, here's his twitter: http://twitter.com/Zappos. Don't forget to follow @Baremagazine too!

More from V Magazine's i60!

Thursday, July 2, 2009

BARE is here to share with you some more insight on V Magazine's issue 60 with cover star Cameron Diaz.

Photographed by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott in London, Cameron is wearing Prada shorts and boots – the bra was fashioned by the stylist and made from gaffer tape!

From what we see, the issue will also be featuring Donatella Versace, who embodies the spirit of Versace at its best, and male models Ludwig and Matt!

V Magazine “Donatella After Dark”
"The queen of evening glamour has never shed away from making a statement – in her work or her personal style. For women who want to embody the fearless VERSACE spirit this season, there’s no shortage of ways to do it"

And because BARE adores male models, here are two advance shots of the male models, Ludwig and Matt, in the V Magazine “Eight Portraits” beauty portfolio.
