Cupcake Between Classes

The past few years have brought about the rise of gourmet cupcake bakeries like Sprinkles Cupcakes in Los Angeles, Magnolia Bakery in NYC, and Tea Cake in Emeryville; and ever since, cupcakes have become fashion's go-to dessert. For busy college students like us, it is often difficult to make it all the way out to a cupcake bakery for one of these delicious snacks. Luckily for us, the Bay Area has it's first ever mobile cupcake bakery, "Cupkates" and it stops right here in Berkeley! You may have spotted Cupkates launch at Caltopia last week, and now we are lucky enough to be graced with their presence at both Bancroft and Telegraph as well as in Downtown Berkeley on a weekly basis!

Follow Cupkates on Twitter for real time updates about when they will be in Berkeley! Don't forget to follow us on Twitter either!

Our Favorite Store Goes "Wild"

Sunday, August 30, 2009

As the release of the film adaptation of one of our favorite children's books, "Where the Wild Things Are," gets closer, more about the film is being revealed. W Magazine's Editor's blog posted a preview of the upcoming "Where the Wild Things Are" jewelry collection that will be sold at Opening Ceremony. We love the quirky look of these pieces and despite how they are inspired by a children's book written in 1963, these pieces fit perfectly in today's fashion landscape. This makes us even more excited for the film's release on October 16!

Litter SF :: Shop Green DIY

Saturday, August 29, 2009

While browsing through blogs, I came across a name that caught my eye: Litter SF. Being a Berkeley student, I always pay extra attention to products and businesses that originate in the SF Bay area. Designers Rachael and Mackenzie are sisters who take pieces they find in flea markets, vintage stores, and the like and refigure them into interesting jewelry pieces such as body jewelry, shoe jewelry, hand jewelry, along with much more. To wear a piece from Litter SF, you will be wearing a bay area based brand that makes pieces that are limited in quantity and are often one-of-a-kind. Recently featured in 7x7 Magazine and Harper's Bazaar, LitterSF is likely to catch on around the country and I can't wait to see what their next step is!

You can purchase the jewelry exclusively through LitterSF's website.

VPL Contour Leggings, photo from shopbop.com

I came across these amazing leggings by VPL that could pass for dressy pants. These are perfect for those days when you need to be a little less casual. Recently, NY Magazine's The Cut blog featured a quiz that consisted of words that define a few recent fashion amalgamations/trends. I guess I should actually call those VPL treggings. How many of the following words can you define? Or own?

1. Shootie
2. Jegging
3. Spant
4. Skort
5. Hairring
6. Jort
7. Swacket
8. Tregging
9. Glittens

Undercover Intern: Part 1

Thursday, August 13, 2009

One of BARE's Execs, we will reveal no names here, is interning in New York City... in the same building as much fashion elite. She gets off at the 6th floor, but along the way are some notable companies: GAP, Cole Haan, Converse, and a few more. She might be able to bring more photos over the next few days. For now, here's your look into GAP corporate. Sorry, she will venture no further than this. But if you have questions about the fashions of employees, ask away and she may respond. She sees them and hears them in the elevator daily...

Target Back To School Event

For the first time ever, Target's Back to School event has come to UC Berkeley to welcome our Class of 2013! I was able to sit down with Target Spokesperson Leah Guimond to ask her a few questions about the event.

Q. Who came up with this idea?
A. Target has been partnering with colleges for the past 10 years.

Q. Is this event a UC Berkeley or Target sponsored event?
A. It is a Target-sponsored event for UC Berkeley campus Welcome Week.

Q. They actually shut down the store just for UC Berkeley students? What do we need to bring/ to do in order to participate?
A. Target is hosting a private shopping party for freshmen at 36 universities around the country as part of Welcome Week festivities. During the event, students will be able to shop and buy everything they need from beauty products and fashion pieces to dorm furnishings from more than a dozen Target designer brands. The UC Berkeley event will take place on Thursday, Aug. 27, from 10:30p.m.-12:30a.m, and is exclusively for incoming freshmen. The shopping event is a great way to welcome students to campus, help them meet new people and ease their transition to college life. Shopping events also provide students the opportunity to stock up on food and housing essentials they need. Students must show their Cal ID as well as submit a waiver form when boarding the bus.

Q. How many years has this event gone on for?
A. Target Back-to-College Shopping Events have taken place over 10 years at many different universities across the country. This year there are a total of 36 schools holding this event and it is the first year the event is taking place at UC Berkeley

The UC Berkeley event is on August 27th 1030pm. Take this opportunity to get all your back-to-school gear. For more information, visit their Facebook page

FIDM's TV Costume Design Exhibition :: Gossip Girl

Friday, August 7, 2009

Rounding the corner of the gallery, I find a younger group huddled in front of the next costume set and only when the crowd thinned that it became explicit why the set was an immediate favorite. The next collection on display came straight out of CW's "Gossip Girl". There, before me, were the lifeless and frozen versions of everybody's favorite group of treacherous and scheming well-to-dos. The set featured the pieces we've all come to know and love these Upper-East-Siders for: Chuck's bold-colored suit (and bowtie, of course!),

Blair's headbands,

"Glam-rock-noir" (and black tights), Jenny,

and Serena's rolled-up blazers.

The characters have become so popularized by their individual fashion tastes that it comes as no challenge knowing which mannequin is who (at least for those who religiously follow the TV series, as I do). I must admit, though, that I was not at all impressed by Nate's attire which I found bland, boring, and completely unimaginative. The Nate mannequin was garbed with a plain navy pin-striped suit and a tie.

Who's your favorite Upper East Sider?

BARE attends FIDM's 4th Annual Outstanding Art of TV Costume Design Exhibition

Thursday, August 6, 2009

Fellow BARE Staffer, Beatrice Eyales was honored to attend FIDM's 4th Annual Outstanding Art of Television Costume Design Exhibition Opening Gala. She is here to share with our beloved BARE readers the first look into one of the major highlights of her summer:

As an aspiring Mass Communications/Anthropology double-major, I've decided to dedicate a part of my summer interning for the University of California, Los Angeles' Fowler Museum. For about two months now, I've been working under the Communications and Marketing Department of one of the most well-regarded cultural museums in Los Angeles, finding that the position was more than ideal for someone like me because it provided a space for the meeting of my two major passions: communications and cultural anthropology. Little did I know that it would reach out to my love for fashion as well.

Sometime in early July, my boss Stacey, well-aware of my work for BARE Magazine and in Berkeley, handed to me what to Charlie would have been the golden ticket to the Chocolate Factory--a formal invitation to FIDM's Annual Opening Gala. I remember it clearly: walking into her office on a Tuesday morning and seeing the invitation sitting on her desk with a yellow post-it note stuck on top of it that read "For Beatrice". She sat there smiling and it was almost impossible to suppress the excitement, which consumed me at that very moment.

The first three thoughts in my head: (1) Opening gala, (2) What to wear? (3) What to wear, what to wear, what to wear?

The event was held on the 25th of July at the FIDM courtyard and it was nothing short of magnificent. Everywhere were standing tables, mini salad and pasta buffets, open bars, shades of white, brown, orange and vermillion found in every centerpiece, every tablecloth, every piece of drapery used. And the people! The courtyard was filled with the hustle and bustle of a spirited crowd and was studded with some of LA's most respected fashion connoisseurs and socialites, all mingling and toasting to each other, excited from either what they have seen or what they have yet to see in the exhibit.

I was excited to socialize, of course (because, with such a crowd, who wouldn't?), but I wanted to make sure I saw the exhibition first. The costumes were, after all, the main attraction of the event.

Dim and dramatic lighting eased one through the gallery and, upon visiting, guests are immediately welcomed into the exhibit by an actual Emmy trophy nestled inside a plexiglass case. And, as I walked on to see the first of the set of costumes on display, lo and behold who greets me first: Coco Chanel. The first costume set on display featured original Chanel pieces used in the filming of "Coco Chanel" (2008) for Lifetime Television. On display were suits, shoes, necklaces, head pieces and hats all in shades of cream, white, and classic Chanel black. The attention to detail alone was stunning. The costume designers for the movie paid very close attention to everything the characters wore--from the hats on their heads to the shoes on their feet--and the mannequins donning the much-coveted attires attested well to the fact that even a simple string of pearls can completely transform an outfit. The costume set exuded that sense of timelessness and elegance often associated with Chanel and the classicality which the house had always been known for.
